Our first Scout Den Meeting

Our first den meeting was a huge success. Someone told me I was a very ambitious den leader. I thought for a second that maybe I was expecting too much out of the boys. Our den meeting was for one and a half hours and there was not a moment the boys were board. I was so caught up with the meeting I totally forgot to take some pictures. But when it was all said and done I realized that if the boys stay interested and they are having fun then I did my job.

I started out the meeting by going over the Cub Scout promise, Law of the Pack and Cub scout Motto.

As I was going over the Law of the Pack with the boys, I struck a nerve with them. The last sentence states, The Cub Scout gives good will. I asked if anyone could tell me what that meant. They were all raising their hands letting me know what good will was and how they should help people in trouble. At that point a big red light went off in my head and I stopped everyone in their tracks. I told them I wanted to make something perfectly clear and that they should never help an adult. If they see an adult in need they should get another adult to help them. They should never go to that adult and try to help. That one simple sentence turned into a forty five minute discussion on staying away from strangers and how to be safe in public. They could have talked about that all night but I had other things planned. I told them we will talk about it again next week. So we moved on and talked about recycling. I brought in some samples of what we recycle and discussed many was to save energy in the home so we could keep our planet healthy. I thought it would be a great idea if we had our den flag. So I decided that each boy makes a flag that represented keeping our planet healthy and what we could do to achieve that goal. These boys were more ambitious than I could ever be. They put together some detailed flags and told a great story. The dads helped making the flag pole out of PVC pipe.

Going over the work.
This was the example I gave them.
All the felt parts I made for them to create their environment flag.
Completed Flag!!! For now anyway.  I have 28 boys in my den.  Ten did not attend the first meeting.  Next week is going to be very interesting.....
The Cisco Kids piece of the flag.  His says, Use the dead trees.  Don’t put bombs in the woods.  This steamed from the day he had a school.  They were doing soft and hard lockdowns.  His teacher was telling them the reason for a lock down and the word bomb must have come up because everyone in his class was bomb obsessed.
