Cake Aution hits a new high

Our third annual Cub Scout Cake Auction was a huge success. All the boys brought at least two cakes to have auctioned off. There were some amazing cakes. Before going to the Auction, The Cisco Kid asked how much he could bid up to on a cake. At first the Chief said $20.00. Then we increased it to $25.00. When the bidding started and we saw how much the cakes were going for, we increased it again to $37.00. Even with his increased amount he could not put his bidding paddle to work. Most of the cakes were going for $35.00 to $60.00. There were a couple of them that went for $80.00 and I am happy to say that the Phineas and Ferb cake went for a whopping $130.00. The smaller chocolate cake went for $80.00. It was nice that my two cakes brought in two hundred and ten dollars.

The first cake was a Phineas & Ferb cake. The story is....Perry stole Dr Doofensmurf, Rayinator and put it on the Ski lift. Dr Doofensmurf is watching him get away from the top of the mountain. Phineas & Ferb has a very large fan on the back of their snow board to get them down the mountain with minimal work. Candace is stuck on top of the mountain with a ski problem.

The cake was a vanilla pound cake with cookies and cream filling and vanilla butter cream. All characters are made out of chocolate.  I used The Cake Boss's sponge cake recipe.

He is making rice crispy treats to make the mountain ski slopes on the cake.
Grinding up the orio cookies to put in the cream for the filling.
The second cake was a chocolate devil's food cake with vanilla cream center and chocolate fruit.

The Cisco Kid has his paddle and is ready to place his bids on some cakes.
He is telling everyone how delicious the cake is and what it is made out of.
His face when the price was going up to that 130.00 mark.

The Cake Boss Sponge cake recipe.

It is a scratch recipe, and the secret to its light and fluffy texture is the beating of the eggs! This recipe is best made in a stand mixer.

4 eggs
2 cups sugar
1 tsp vanilla
1 cup whole milk
1/4 cup butter (lightly salted)
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt

    1. Beat eggs in large mixing bowl with paddle attachment for 4 minutes. Do not skip this step!

2. Add sugar, and continue beating for another 4-5 minutes until light and fluffy. Add vanilla and stir on low until just combined.

3. In a separate bowl, sift together dry ingredients. Add to eggs and sugar on low speed until just combined.

4. In a saucepan, heat milk and butter on low heat just until butter is melted. Add to batter, beat just until combined.

5. Pour into two greased and floured 8" round cake pans.

6. Bake at 325 until the middle springs back when touched, or a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Remove from oven and let stand in pans for 10 minutes. Then turn out onto wire cooling racks and cool completely.

Hint: Cakes are close to being done when you start to smell them.

Molding Chocolate Recipe

8 oz. of white vanilla chocolate bark
1/3 cup of corn syrup
mix together and colors if you desire.

Store in a baggie.

ROBOT FOR CUB SCOUTS

We are having our Blue & Gold Celebration in February. This is a big graduation party where the boys receive their next rank badge. Every year we have a theme. Last year it was all about camping. This year I thought it would be great to have a Robot theme and have every Den build a robot to show at the Blue & Gold Banquet. Not only are they going to show their creation but everyone is going to take a vote for their favorite robot. The winning Den will receive an Ice Cream Party. The trick about the Ice cream party is that all the losing Dens will have to provide the winning Den with all the items they request. That could be dangerous!!!

Since the majority of the dens are run by Men, I came up with some rules so they would not get out of control. Guys would not only make this electronic but they would spare no expense to make it amazing. It's a Guy thing. The rules were..... it had to be made up of items donated from our scout families. Nothing could be purchased. We had to make it out of leftovers, unused household items & recyclable materials. It had to stand on its own, it could not exceed four feet tall, wide or long and it could not be run by electric or battery.

My Scouts and Scout parents got together today and started building the robot. They all brought in some amazing items from home. You would be surprised what is hanging around your house when you really look. We set a time frame of 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and hoped we would get it done. The boys chose the style robot. They were very adamant about the propellers. They spent about a half hour with me going over the robot and how we were going to put it together. Then we broke up into teams and started building it. All the moms and dads were doing different parts of the robot. A half hour after that we lost the boys to basketball, playing on the trampoline, shooting water at each other, etc. Shortly after that we lost the Dads.

We stopped for lunch and thought we would get together another week to complete it but we were all busy. We made the decision to complete it today. Seven hours later we came up with this outstanding robot.

The head and hands are made out of milk jugs (the red eyes are lazar eye's that were made out of a red gift bag). The legs, body and arms are made out of boxes. The cannons are made out of cardboard tubes (the red in the cannon is a gift bag cut to the size need). Knee pad and Knee cannon is made out of plastic caps at the end of tubes. The feet are made up of cardboard tubes cut in half. The chest plate is painted styrofoam. The propellers are PVC pipe and cardboard. We have Cable wires that we cut to make it look very mechanical. Of course every great warrior has minions. We added minions to the robot as well. Everyone pulled together and made this outrageous robot that surely must win.
